For the first 29 years of his career, Alain Burguet was content to build his reputation without any grand cru vines. That changed in 2004, when he got the chance to work his magic in one of greatest grand crus of all: Chambertin-Clos de Bèze. 

Since then, the Burguet Clos de Bèze has been among the great expressions of this hallowed ground, rendered in the domaine’s classic style. Cases in point are the breathtakingly perfumed, yet built-to-age, 2017 and 2019, each the essence of this legendary climat in a great vintage. 

Both are already very rare in the U.S. market. But we can offer them as a two-bottle set at a price well below what you would pay elsewhere. 

Building on Greatness
Within a decade of taking over from their illustrious father, Jean-Luc and Eric Burguet have proven themselves not only worthy successors but masterful vignerons in their own right. 

But they came to the task fully prepared. Not only had they worked alongside their father for a decade, they had followed their enological schooling by working at other great Côte de Nuits domaines like Bachelet and Gouges.

To make one of Burgundy’s elite small domaines even greater, they converted their father’s organic viticulture to biodynamic. And today they harvest even later than he did. (Alain was always one of the last in Gevrey to harvest, ensuring full phenolic maturity.)

In the cellar, Jean-Luc and Eric’s methods are minimalist in the extreme. The native yeast fermentations are allowed to begin and progress at their own pace, without temperature control. And minimal sulfur is used for maximum expressiveness, while extractions are gentle and timed according to the character of the vintage. 

Lastly, they’ve reduced the amount of new oak for barrel aging to no more than 30%, even for Bèze. That’s how they’re able to capture the inherently elegant, yet long-lived, character of Clos de Bèze through the lens of such classic vintages as 2017 and 2019.
